Original recipes must accompany each pumpkin cookie submission. Contestants may bring their own pumpkin, or one will be included with registration.

Join historian Stephen M. Gross at the Greenwood Lake Public Library, 79 Waterstone Rd., to learn about these grand vessels that plied the waters of the lake, ferrying travelers from the nearby trains from New York City, to spectacular hotels on the water for a bit of R & R, during the 19th century. The Greenwood Lake Merchants Guild is having a Halloween event on Thursday, Oct 30th between 3:30 – 6:30. There will be trick or treating at the Windermere Avenue merchants. The Fire Dept Halloween Parade will start at 6:30 pm and march down Windermere Avenue and finish at the Elks Club, where there will be games and food.

10. Oct. 22 | Todd Coolman and Friends Jazz Quartet | 7PM
Tickets $25 each, $15 for students. Grammy award-winning bassist Todd Coolman returns to Warwick Grove with Steve Wilson, Renee Rosnes and John Riley to perform a variety of music from the Great American Songbook, modern jazz standards, and perhaps an original or two. The Warwick Valley Chorale will kick off its 70th Anniversary year with our Fall 2010 Recruitment/Rehearsal schedule beginning on Tuesday, September 14th. There are no auditions required – just a love of singing and music! Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings at the Warwick Reformed Church, 16 Maple Ave, Warwick, NY 10990 from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. Black Dirt Feast Raises $6,000 for Pine Island Community

The Second Annual Black Dirt Feast was held on July 27, 2010, is an al fresco fund-raiser organized by the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce. Some of the most distinguished chefs in the Warwick Valley joined forces to collaborate on a multi-course sit-down dinner in the fields of Pine Island, at Scheuermann Farm.

Beverages will include award-winning hard cider from the Warwick Valley Winery, wines from local merchants, Peck’s Wines & Spirits and Pine Island Wine & Liquors. In addition there will be entertainment during the cocktail hour by the Warwick Valley Chorale and the Skye Jazz Trio during dinner.

Table decorations, displaying flowers arranged by Sally Scheuermann from her nearby gardens on the Scheuermann Farms & Nurseries property, will be unique, hand-crafted pottery from two local potters, Judy Duboff and Dr. Deb Bernstein, who have been working together molding the clay, firing, and glazing the vases.

PINE ISLAND — At the annual Pine Island Pumpkin Festival, participants will have four chances to win prizes with pumpkins: the pumpkin tossing contest, the pumpkin decorating and carving contest, the largest pumpkin contest and the pumpkin pie contest. The Pumpkin Festival will be from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 12 at Pine Island Park, and it will feature entertainment. There will be three age categories for contestants: 12 and under, 13-17, and 18 and over, with prizes made available by area businesses. All pumpkin carving must be done at home and brought to the festival to be entered. Decorating must be done at Pine Island Park within the allotted time. Contestants may bring their own pumpkin, or one will be included with registration; they are also responsible for bringing their own decorating materials. Pumpkin pies, to be baked at home and delivered to the festival, must have ingredients listed and the name and contact information of the baker. Participants can enter as individuals or as teams. Participants can enter the pumpkin tossing, decorating/carving, and weight contests for $5 per individual or $15 maximum per family. The pie bake-off is separate and costs $5 to enter. Registration will be available on site, beginning promptly at 10 a.m. The pie registration will close at 1 p.m. Additional information is available at the festival’s Web site, www.Warwickinfo.net/pumpkinfestival. Food vendors will include Black Dirt Gourmet, Pennings Sweet Shoppe, Breezie Maples organic confections, Jammin’ James Kettle Popcorn and Chumley’s Barbecue. Pennings will have apples from its orchard, apple cider and cider doughnuts, homemade fudge and caramel apples. Orange County leads the state in pumpkin production with more than 700 acres under cultivation, and Pine Island farmers are a significant portion of that number. Seven Outstanding Chefs, One Superb Feast
James Haurey, the multi-award winning chef at the Crystal Inn , Warwick, added a signature dish to the menu for the First Annual Black Dirt Feast held on July 28, 2009, an al fresco fund-raiser organized by the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce . Some of the most distinguished chefs in the Warwick Valley joined forces to collaborate on a multi-course sit-down dinner (see choice of entrée, below ) in the fields of Pine Island, at Scheuermann Farm .The Tuscan-style sunset Feast, a celebration of the local farm produce and the chefs who use it in their restaurants, benefitted the Florida Food Pantry and the Community Farm Workers Center, Goshen. Two Culinary Institute of America graduates, chefs Michael DiMartino of the Landmark Inn , Warwick, and Erik Johansen of the Iron Forge Inn , Bellvale, each donated their services to an entrée course. Heather Kurosz, a culinary graduate of the distinguished Newbury School for Hotel and Restaurant Management, Boston, and a force in innovative cuisine at Black Dirt Gourmet , created an adventurous salad for The Feast. The appetizer course was contributed by Enrique Romero, the chef at the popular Copper Bottom in Florida. Also participating was Bill Leech, Chef at the brand new Coquito , the Latin restaurant on Forester Avenue, the successor to the Backyard Grill where he was owner-chef for many years. Leech, a graduate of the Florida International University with a degree in Hotel/Business Management, has many years’ experience in the restaurant business. Leech, along with Lisa Ciriello whose all-natural gourmet cookies have received nationwide acclaim, will contribute the desert course. In addition, two confectioners, Lauren Brophy and Leigh Petrosky, from Candy Apple Shoppe , the Glenwood, NJ, store, famed for its chocolate truffles and 32 varieties of candy apples, donated freshly hand-dipped, chocolate covered apples as part of the desert course at The Feast. Their crisp, fresh apples are smothered in caramel and chocolate – white, milk or dark – then coated with a variety of nuts and candies. Wines were provided by both Vito Carlucci of Pine Island Wine & Liquors and Bill Iurato, of Peck’s Wine & Spirits , Warwick, NY. The Warwick Valley Winery supplied its award-winning cordials, and some if its unique Black Dirt Red wine.

Music was supplied by Peter Holmgren’s Village Music Shop , the leading resource for music lessons, instruments, accessories, and professional studio musicians in the Hudson Valley.
